Edge Project Multi Media Presentation

Ever wonder what a Sock Drive is? A Sock Drive is where you receive  donations from people that are able to go into the store and buy socks every day. The Sock Drive helps people that are not able to simply do that.

Here is what a Sock Drive can do when a lot of people donate socks for people in need.

My story for the Sock Drive is quite simple. I was looking online for ideas that I can do for my EDGE project. All I knew is that I wanted to help people in need...somehow. I didn't want to do a food drive (because everyone does that) but doing some kind of drive sounds pretty cool! I kept looking for more ideas and then in class I heard that there are doctors that are doing these Sock Drives across the states because they found that by having a good pair of socks helps people and their health issues. They found that with a good pair of socks it increases the health of their patients that have foot issues.
When I found out about this I then started googling Sock Drives. I then came upon this website http://thejoyofsox.org/sock-drives/ these ladies made it a regular organization that is dedicated to people donating socks!
They gave me ideas on how to get my sock drive going, and where and how to donate. So with the Sock Drive in mind and it being my approved EDGE project on I went to plan and conduct my very own Sock Drive!
I figured it would be easier if I just post my journal of all the things that happened to me:

Finally got a job and now I can start working on my EDGE project!
May 7, 2014
Went shopping for items needed; posters, and bins!
July 15, 2014
I am so glad that I am doing this. I will be helping a lot of people in the community that are not able to receive something simple like socks. Today I am making the fliers to have people be aware that this event is coming up.
July 18, 2014
Went around to different organizations that I am involved in and told people about the Sock Drive and who it will help.
July 19, 2014
Went around to the different places that said they will allow the Sock Drive bin in their building, Handed out fliers out, also handed the fliers out in different wards around the community.
July 20, 2014
Today is the official day that the Sock Drive starts! I am excited and at the same time very nervous. I really want people to donate and make them aware that they should donate more than just clothes and food to people that are in need. Everyone needs socks too! I realized that a lot of people take socks for granted. Everyone wears socks. No one likes to not wear socks, especially ones that have holes in them or are worn out.
July 22, 2014
We have donations! It’s a slow start but I am sure it will pick up soon! It’s getting closer to the date and usually people donate a lot on the last day, and it’s during the week.
July 25, 2014
Its FRIDAY! People donated socks! Not a whole lot but I am sure it will help someone out!
July 26, 2014
Last day and time to go around and pick up all of the bins! I did not have the results that I had wanted but still people did donate!
August 4,2014

Went to Las Vegas and donated the socks to the Soup Kitchen. They handed out the socks that were donated. It was a great feeling helping the people that are in need. It felt like I made a change and difference in someone’s life. Even with the little donations that I had.

Knowing what I know now, There are some things that I could have done differently. But while in the moment and doing the Sock Drive. I would not  change a thing. Even with little donations that I had, those people that received these socks. I changed their lives, whether they know it or not.

The Sock Drive

2014/Fall
 Project Summary
The Sock Drive basically is people donating new or gently used socks. In order for the best results you need to make fliers with dates on them of when you are planning on doing the sock drive. Make sure that you post the fliers everywhere with details of what the Sock Drive is and tells people what you are looking for. When you are planning on doing the sock drive make sure you put out a box/bin with the Sock Drive written on it. The reason why I started the Sock Drive is because I have noticed that there are a lot of homeless people that get plenty donations of clothes, food and other hygiene products but never socks! There are doctors out there that have noticed that a good pair of socks helps with your body being healthy. A bad pair of socks and shoes can lead to potential problems in the person’s body. The Sock Drive is really easy and you do get a lot of donations.

Project Highlights
·         I did not have a huge experience while doing the Sock Drive. Honestly I just loved the fact that I was helping a lot of people that did not have a good pair of socks, knowing the damage that can happen to people that are not able to have nice socks.
·          I ended up going to the Las Vegas homeless shelter. There were people there that were very happy to receive these socks. One person could not stop saying thank you over and over again.
·         You don’t have to go to Vegas to drop off the donations, you really can do it anywhere you like socks are welcome everywhere.
This project not only helped me realize that I do have a voice and I can make it loud enough for people to listen to me and help me make a change in other people’s lives. Knowing that I can help to make a change makes me realize that it can prepare anyone for their future endeavors. For me specifically I learned that one simple thing can make a big difference in someone’s life. That’s the best feeling in the world!

Edge Project: Sock Drive

Sock Drive!

3.     Email:breanneedgel@gmail.com
4.     PhoneL702)279-5140
5.     Major & Minor: Biology
6.     Title of Project: Sock Drive
7.     Expected Project Start Date (Semester/Year):Fall 2014
8.     Expected Project End Date (Semester/Year):Fall 2014
B. Abstract:
The Sock Drive is a charity that will help people that do not have socks. Many people that are homeless today go without new fresh socks. Pediatricians who see these people walk around town daily without socks shows signs of a major health risk problem. So the Sock Drive around the fall of 2014 will accept donations of brand new (unopened) socks. We will have designated areas that will be placed throughout town that will be accessible for people to drop off donations. The sock drive accepts any volunteers from any age, also we will get clubs and organizations involved with volunteering and spreading the word around. Once the boxes are set in the designated area that is when we will start our Sock Drive. The Sock Drive will be placing fliers all around campus, and will be making announcements in classrooms. The Sock Drive will be posting fliers also around Cedar City to get the community involved. Every day the socks that have been donated will be picked up, to lose the risk of anyone stealing anything. Once the sock drive is over, we will then donate the socks to a place that is able to give out socks to people that are in need.
C. Project Details
1.     Explain how the project connects with your personal motivations and career aspirations.
This project really just connects more with my personal motivations. I like to help people, and the people that are in need. I personally have been one of those people that have been helped when I was in need, and I would like to return the love and care to other people who just simply cannot buy socks. This project connects with my career aspirations by knowing what can go wrong with people and their health by not simply buying socks.
2.     Explain how the project ties in with concepts of community engagement.
This project ties into the community engagement by allowing the community to help the community that is in need. There are people in this town that do need the proper care that others can give to them just by buying them one pair of socks. It also lets the community know that there are people out there that are in need of help.
3.     Provide a timeline for completion of each step of the project.
I would like to complete my project Fall 2014, when people are more willing to donate things to organizations and charities.
1st- I would like to get organizations around the city to get involved. The more organizations involved the higher the success rate. I would like to start talking to organizations around July 11th. To at least give them a heads up to decide if they want to participate or not. Also, start working on what the fliers will look like.
2nd- During the week of the 13th I would be getting things ready. Like make a drop off box and figure out where to put them that would be the easiest place for people that are participating to drop off the socks. Which would most likely be participating locations.
3rd- On July 13th I will start printing the fliers to put them around campus and other chosen areas. These fliers will have the details of how long the sock drive is going on, and where the drop off designations will be. The date that the sock drive will start is July 20th.  I will also have to get the fliers approved at SUU in order to put them on campus.
4th- By the time I get the fliers out on July 13th  and the designated areas for the drop offs. Each day I will go around to the designated areas and pick up the socks so that none will be taken or lost for at least two weeks.
5th- By the time the sock drive will end, which is on the 26th of July I will pick up all of the donation drop offs and collect the last bit of socks .
6th- I will then choose an organization here in Cedar City to donate the socks to by the end of Fall 2014 semester.

4.     Provide a budget, with projected expenses and revenues, for your project.
Expense List:
Gas-       $60.00
Fliers-    $5.00
Boxes-  $15.00
Revenue List:
Get Edge scholarship- $500
Summer job- $100

5.     Explain how your personal strengths will help you complete your project.
The personal strengths that I have are that I am very well-liked by many people. When I set my mind to something I get it done. I am a great leader, along with being a great leader you need to have great listening skills. I also am great at working with other people.

6.     Explain how you will overcome your personal weaknesses and outside threats to complete your project
Personal weaknesses that I have that will keep me from completing my project is that sometimes I forget easy tasks that I need to get done, along with time management. The only way that I see me getting over those weaknesses is to set reminders on my phone so that I will know what needs ti be done next. The outside threats that might happen are that there might be other charities that will be going on while I am doing mine. Another outside threat that I see is that someone might steal the socks or the box. Or no one donates at all. I will have to overcome these weaknesses by possibly moving the sock drive to either an earlier date or later when there are less charities going on. With someone stealing the boxes or socks...I guess I helped at least someone who needed both. I will just have to set up another box and hope for the best.
